World record-holder Powell enters 100 meters in Rieti

August 28th, 2007 by admin

RIETI, Italy: World record-holder Asafa Powell entered next week's Rieti meet for his first 100-meter race since his world championships loss to Tyson Gay.

“I know the Rieti track and I know it's very fast,” Powell said in a statement released by Rieti organizers on Tuesday. “I'm not looking for any revenge against who beat me. It's better to look forward.”

Powell finished third in the 100 at the worlds in Osaka, Japan, on Sunday. American rival Gay won in 9.84 seconds followed by Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas in 9.91. Powell finished in 9.96.

Powell is yet to compete in the 4×100 relay for Jamaica at the worlds.

Powell will skip the Golden League meet in Zurich two days before competing on Sept. 9 in Rieti, where six middle distance world records have been set.

Powell twice last year equaled his world record of 9.77 seconds. He ran three times in Rieti from 2002-04, with his best time of 10.12 in 2003.

John Drummond (1994) and Abdul Aziz Zakiri (2005) share the Rieti record of 9.99.
