UConn hopes to become regular bowl material

February 1st, 2008 by sport

CHARLOTTE, N.C.: Randy Edsall stood at midfield Tuesday, wheeling back and forth so the Connecticut coach could watch the offense and defense at the same time.

The Huskies were practicing on Christmas in preparation for their second bowl appearance in four years, and it was evident from Edsall's focus and short whistle blasts that he remains motivated by the doubters who said postseason football would never happen at his school.

Six years after UConn (9-3) moved to the highest level of college football, the school is enjoying its best season, which will end Saturday against Wake Forest (8-4) in the Meineke Bowl.

“It's very satisfying, because there were a lot of people that never thought that UConn could compete at this level in terms of football,” Edsall said.

Few Europeans in town for Australian Masters at Huntingdale

November 21st, 2007 by sport

MELBOURNE, Australia: For a European PGA Tour event, the Australian Masters has turned out to have a shortage of Europeans.

Danish golfer Thomas Bjorn was the only European player in the top 100 to travel to Melbourne's Huntingdale for the event, which is being co-sanctioned with the Australasian PGA Tour.

But Bjorn was forced to pull out of the tournament Wednesday to return to Denmark, where his wife, Pernilla, will undergo back surgery.

When Bjorn arrived Tuesday, he said the timing at the end of an extensive European season, the long-haul travel and lower prize money compared with other tournaments contributed to the low player turnout.

“Times have changed very much, especially the European Tour has changed in that we play a season that begins in the middle of January and finishes a week before Christmas,” Bjorn said.

Reports say Beckham to sit for start of Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia

November 21st, 2007 by sport

LONDON: Hours after saluting David Beckham as one of the world's best right-sided midfielders, England coach Steve McClaren reportedly was preparing to bench the Los Angeles Galaxy star for Wednesday's European Championship qualifier against Croatia.

Several major England daily newspapers, including the Independent, Daily Mail and the Times of London, all were reporting Wednesday the 32-year-old midfielder would be relegated to the bench after being selected for the England team for the first time since the 1998 World Cup.

With Russia heavily favored to beat Andorra, England needs at least a draw against Croatia to avoid missing the finals of a major tournament for the first time since the 1994 World Cup.

In October 2001, Beckham's goal from a free kick earned a 2-2 draw with Greece and sent England to the World Cup.
